Tootsie Roll and I made a journey this past weekend. It may not have been incredible, but it was important and it certainly was a joy! My dad had a knee replacement surgery and so Tootsie Roll and I packed our bags and headed north for some family time. Tootsie Roll had a chance to hang out with Ida Mae - mom and dad's schnoodle! We took a little road trip to visit my Uncle Rickey for his 66th birthday and Ida and Tootsie got to meet and play with his new terrier mix named Minnow!
I got to check out my niece as a cheerleader...sooo much fun and it brought back so many good memories for me - a middle school and high school cheerleader from back in the 70's and 80's! And Tootsie, Ida and dad were there to greet me and mom when we got home.
Mom and I helped out at the church chili dinner at which I enjoyed serving drinks and refilling plates with yummy home made rolls. And then she had to get packed for a little girl's trip to Florida. Ida helped with the packing while dad, Tootsie and I enjoyed some couch time.
Some wintery weather put me to task at shoveling out the drive and walk ways so dad had ice free areas for walking with the healing knee. Ida and Tootsie supervised from the back door.
But what was best was just that down time at home....a little double solitaire. Some marathon tv watching of Pickers and Dr. Pol - some of dad's favorites. Dad and I also made a trip to his scheduled follow up appointment with the surgeon and a physical therapy visit with some breakfast beforehand... which allowed for some good conversation. And the dogs were either a part of the conversation or at our sides.
And that's our dogs...low key, by our sides, a part of the daily routine...a part of the journey...be it incredible, joyful, important or mundane...for us human and dogs are intertwined...a part of the family fabric...a lesson I learned well from my family and will cherish and carry on until I perish.
